The Ontario Superior Court of Justice can hear cases in all areas of the law except those that are specifically assigned to other courts. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice hears most civil cases as well as the most serious criminal cases.

Under federal law, the Superior Court of Justice has exclusive jurisdiction over all cases of divorce and division of property, while under provincial law, child protection and adoption cases must be heard in the Ontario Court of Justice. Both courts preside over child and spousal support cases as well as child custody and access cases.
